What is the DELF-DALF ?

Created in 1985, the DELF (Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française”) and the DALF ("Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française”) French language diplomas are awarded by the French Ministry of Education. Six different diplomas can be awarded according to command of the French language. They are recognized all over the world.


Elementary level :

DELF A1: validates a learner’s first acquired knowledge of French. The learner can respond to simple questions. He/she can speak about himself/herself and his/her immediate environment.

DELFA2: validates the competence of the learner having reached elementary level. The learner is able to communicate in simple contexts of everyday life.

Independent level :

DELF B1: The learner becomes independent. He/she can understand and follow a discussion and give an opinion. He/she can manage in unexpected situations of everyday life.

DELF B2: The learner can argue about a point of view. He/she communicates clearly and in detail.


The experienced learner :

DALF C1 : The learner can start a spontaneous discussion. His/her discourse is clear, well constructed and devoid of hesitations.

DALF C2 : The learner has an excellent command of the French language. He/she expresses himself/herself fluently and is able to discuss complex topics.

Holders of the DALF (C1 and C2) diplomas are exempt from language tests when enrolling at a French university.

The number of hours training required to sit for these exams varies in relation with the student’s native language and the amount of individual study :

DELF A1 : 60 hours (starting as a beginner)
DELF A2 : 100 to 120 hours after reaching DELF A1 level DELF B1: 150 to 200 hours after reaching DELF A2 level DELF B2 : 180, to 220 hours after reaching DELF B1 level DALF C1 : 200 to 260 hours after reaching DELF B2 level DALF C2 : 200 to 30à hours after reaching DALF C1 level

How to train for the DELF and DALF exams at ILP ?

Standard courses train students for the DELF-DALF written and oral exams (grammar, vocabulary, written and oral comprehension and communications)
The afternoon courses are exclusively devoted to training for the DELF-DALF written and oral exams. Previous test books and various specific materials are used in the so that participants may practise working in exam conditions.
